Paralogue 4

I finally have my damn Thief! Bye-bye, Gaius~♡

Admittedly it got hairy there because Anna ended up running up to the boss before I could chase her down, but I managed to save her anyway.

Miriel's changed to Dark Mage. No real notable differences, but it may come in handy next battle. I'll need every point of Defense I can get, since Sully will likely take the left hand of the map and I'll need other units for help when scrambling for survival.

Yes... one chapter until Chrom marries the Village Maiden. Ugh. As I said, I'll only be using Lucina because of Parallel Falchion. Robin will switch to backing her when that comes.

Final stats:
Schala L20/2 Grandmaster
Lissa L16 Cleric
Sully L18 Cavalier
Miriel L13/1 Dark Mage
Sumia L16 Pegasus Knight
Maribelle L11 Troubador
Panne L12 Taguel
Cordelia L12 Pegasus Knight
Nowi L10 Manakete
Tharja L14 Dark Mage
Anna L1 Trickster

Deaths: 8 (Sully, Miriel, Maribelle, Maribelle, MARIBELLE, Lissa, Sumia, Tharja)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C, Miriel/Schala A, Sully/Sumia A, Panne/Cordelia C, Nowi/Schala C
, Maribelle/Lissa C

I'm going to the airport for a brief trip soon, so updates will disappear for a bit. I'll have cleared a chapter or two by the time I get back online, so don't be surprised if levels take a sudden hike without notes of how they got there.

Hm, I have to update Poisoned Haven, don't I? And Randomized Silver. Ugh...

How To Die Horribly And Repeatedly On Fire Emblem Awakening: A Playtest IV

Chapter 10:

Arguably botched it by failing to get the Thieves, forcing me to sell off Libra's Ward staff after the battle to afford a Second Seal from a traveling merchant. Otherwise fine.

Advise sending Nosferatu!Tharja/Miriel and Nowi/Robin north, accompanied by a healer, and sending others east. Watch out for reinforcements!

Sending Tharja west... did not go well. So send her north, in a corridor where you can handle it.

Final stats:
Schala L20/2 Grandmaster
Lissa L14 Cleric
Sully L18 Cavalier
Miriel L13 Mage
Sumia L14 Pegasus Knight
Maribelle L10 Troubador
Panne L11 Taguel
Cordelia L12 Pegasus Knight
Nowi L9 Manakete
Tharja L13 Dark Mage

Deaths: 8 (Sully, Miriel, Maribelle, Maribelle, MARIBELLE, Lissa, Sumia, Tharja)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C, Miriel/Schala A, Sully/Sumia A, Panne/Cordelia C, Nowi/Schala C

Heavily considering class-changing Miriel to Dark Mage, as I've heard it works better than straight Mage. I have no intention to change the healers because I enjoy healing like a madwoman too much, you couldn't PAY me to change the Pegasus Knights, and I'd prefer to change Panne after L15 if at all possible. I have a Master Seal for Sully, so I'll be promoting her to Paladin. That's my reasoning, anyway. I'll probably change her five seconds after posting this... (I hear class-changes are very good, and they'll probably be especially important in this one. La-dee-dah, wish me luck...)

How To Die Horribly And Repeatedly On Fire Emblem Awakening: A Playtest III

Chapter 9:

Libra was easier than I thought. Overleveled Sully=very handy.

Unfortunately gave up a lot of Exp by throwing Robin into the line of fire in order to reduce enemies around Tharja.

Got Sumia killed off on an earlier attempt. As I said, damned axe-wielders.

Have Sully dispatch Wyvern reinforcements. Pair her with a Pegasus Knight so that she can get back to the action after she's done wiping them out mercilessly. Keep Robin south in order for her to bait the units AROUND Tharja, but not Tharja herself. Check Tharja's movement range carefully. It was really annoying to have to have Nowi take her tomes so she wouldn't murder Tharja on the counterattack that one turn where I screwed it up... REMEMBER THAT ONLY CHROM CAN RECRUIT THARJA!

Final stats:
Schala L20/2 Grandmaster
Lissa L14 Cleric
Sully L16 Cavalier
Miriel L12 Mage
Sumia L13 Pegasus Knight

How To Die Horribly And Repeatedly On Fire Emblem Awakening: A Playtest II

Chapter 8:
Note: I've been trying to catch weaker characters up on Exp. Hence why levels haven't gone up that much. I realize I'm going to screw myself over if I'm not careful, but Sully is very good and can handle a lot of situations. (She's better than Frederick in every stat save Defense [one point] now.)

I have almost a full team by now. Tharja should push me over. ...I don't like using Tharja for the same reason I don't like using Gregor - their stats are wonk and I don't feel like they're particularly good at anything. However, beggars can't be choosers, and I need all the ladies I can get. Even Say'ri. Ugh. After all, if I get enough high-powered women, I'll have enough units to survive Tiki's Paralogue. And more Manaketes NEVER hurt. (Unless you're Jahn and your enemies are carting Divine Weapons. But that's off-topic.)

I hate hate hate hate HATE axe-wielders. They do way too much damage to my Pegasus Knights (since they can hit due to Weapon Triangle Advantage), they do horrible things to squishy units, and I don't have many sword-users to counter them. One of said sword-users is so overpowered I make a point of NOT using her. (A Robin solo is probably easier than one would think. Just grab the free Second Seal from the Renown awards [which I haven't accessed, by the way] when she first hits level 20, use a Master Seal when she hits it again, and generally just let her max out all her caps like she's freaking Donnel.) Just... gaaaaah. They're no longer a joke when you're using only ladies.

The title is a lot less indicative than I thought it would be. You sacrifice a lot of bulk AND SWORD-WIELDERS when you give up the male characters, but careful planning keeps the ladies alive. Besides, Sully's pretty bulky, and Robin is always overpowered. (15 Defense. Mweh heh heh. Choke on that, Frederick.) It's possible... just be prepared for a few losses if you're playing for keeps. (And if you're not a very good tactician. :\ *blergh*)

How To Die Horribly And Repeatedly On Fire Emblem Awakening: A Playtest

All right. So a friend's going to attempt a female-only run sometime, and as such I should use this as an excuse to procrastinate on both work and Nuzlockes try it out to see if it's plausible.

Note: male characters not used = male characters not used for S-rank supports = no second-genners except Lucina, who will be mothered by the Village Maiden. And a level 1 Chrom. *whimper* Are we sure Robin can't, um, stuff Chrom into her harem? Just for safekeeping?

No? Damnit.

General advice after playing several chapters: Pair Up. Pair Up will save your LIFE.

Switch weak units to the front of Pair Ups when you can calculate that proper placement won't get them killed on the next turn, then switch back. Try to keep levels even. You need as many levels as possible.

The exception is the tactician, who is going to get hideously overleveled just because she's the only one who can survive death and murder. Past the first chapter or so, she's a better Jeigan than Frederick. Use her and use her often.

Premonition:
One of you is close to someone who needs help... find this person...fast.

First time through the chapter, Tethys got sniped by a Ballista before I could even get down there.

...Partly because AI-controlled!Gerik ran onto a Fort like a coward and left her standing around in the entranceway, so a Myrmidon got a free hit on her. Gerik, you feckless wimp...

Sent units east to handle the scramble of Myrmidons, Mercenaries, and Bandis, then had Seth rescue Innes and hand him off to Tana for recruitment, then had him wall for Gerik and Tethys while Innes made his way back down.

All units recruited, reinforcements mostly wiped out. Assuming nothing major happens, chapter is in the bag.
guardians_song: Part of Fire Emblem 7's Chapter 19xx CG, colored (Nergal and children)

What an utter and absolute HELLHOLE of a chapter. (Distant Blade)

Didn't recruit Amelia. I'll pick her up in Chapter 13. Missed her by ONE stinkin' turn...

Restarted a few times, but only to look up how to save the villages. Had to have Seth rush down, kill the Pirates, and rush back, while poor Tana acted as target practice for a Pirate to keep him away from the eastern village. Ross swept the east side of the map, essentially. Wasted several good Vulnerary and Elixir charges, but ah well.

Trying to keep levels even. People are starting to hit ten-and-above. Seth is level 4, which should tell you how much I've been using him as a crutch. I am badly out of practice playing FE, and I am in BAD shape regarding playing FE without any sort of Arena or Skirmish Abuse. These chapters were all so much freaking easier when I was carrying around promoted or almost-promoted units. At least Seth is no Marcus.

All right, Fire Emblem 8. I concede that you're really not a cakewalk when I don't abuse your mechanics. Happy?

Ha. Maybe, after this, I'll try an ENM run without Arena Abuse. I'll see whether Arena-Abused!HHM is easier than that...

Let's just call this growing up as a Fire Emblem player and leave it at that...

(Actually, all frustration aside? I'm enjoying the challenge. The mage-heavy party is... dubious, but nonetheless really pays off when I have to kill enemies fast. And Ross has more than paid back the Exp. I invested into him as a Trainee. Yeah, I could have put it into Vanessa instead, but VANESSA could not have casually wiped out several axe-users and a couple of Archers, now could she?

...Aaagh, speaking of flyers? I ship Tana/Cormag. I am going to be in so much pain whenever there's an archer-happy chapter with those two around... )

___

Renvall was actually not very bad when Ephraim showed up. I used Kyle and Forde to soak up some enemies, though I really should have granted that Exp. to units I actually planned on USING, and had Ephraim just walk through the area as a maelstrom of destruction. Meanwhile Ross and the mages covered the right half of the map, and all was well. Except I stalled so I could get Natasha Exp. for all the wounded units, and so my turncount is absolutely hideous, but I think it will pay off long-term. After all, she turns into a Bishop, and Slayer made Artur effectively my most powerful endgame unit in my previous run. TWO Bishops = wiping the floor with monster armies. Ja?

Jan. 8th, 2014

guardians_song: A sprite edit of Nils from Fire Emblem, looking shocked: CHRISTMAS EDITION (Nils)

Now inside Renvall.

*Nils-voice* A shitload of spear-wielders, Knights, sword-users, archers, and mages await you. The weak and careless will be cut down without a moment's regret. Speaking of 'weak and careless', why did you bring SO MANY low-DEF units to a chapter in which you'll need all the stalling you can get? Also, why is it that this is the SECOND time in two chapters that Colm's dodged death because you miscalculated a ranged unit's attack area?

Oh, never mind. I suppose I ought just to be thankful you're doing this to a game without ME in it.

I refuse to admit that the juvenile half-dragon has a point.

guardians_song: Icon depiction of the sporker Richard. (Default)

Aside from Bullshit Clause on Fog of War chapter, no deaths.

Colm came close, but dodged a 56% chance Baleful Gaze or whatever from one of those Mogalls to survive.

Aaaand... fuuuuuck, I missed the Orion's Bolt because the woman died. Doesn't matter. Neimi isn't promoting for a long, looong time.

I may have... heh heh... exploited a surviving Cavalier and accompanying Troubador just a bit. And let Artur whittle down the boss rather than taking risks. See if you can catch which unit did the Cavalier-grinding!

Current Team:
Eirika: Lord 9.81, Seth B
Natasha: Cleric 4.07
Artur: Monk 7.10, Lute C
Seth: Paladin 2.61, Eirika B
Gilliam: Knight 11.12
Ross: Pirate 3.82
Neimi: Archer 2.83, Colm B
Colm: Thief 4.78, Neimi B
Lute: Mage 4.51, Artur C
Joshua: Myrmidon 7.41

How I managed to do something so stupid on one of the easiest games in the Fire Emblem franchise.

First I must explain that I'm exempting myself from the permadeath clause on any Fog of War chapter where I don't know where all the reinforcements are. Because I fully understand that Fog of War chapters are not the cheapest things known to humankind, but... uh... I'll get back to you on anything that IS cheaper than that.

Second, it's been a long time since I played Victims of War, and never without Arena Abuse on the immediately preceding chapter.

Third, I miscalculated a Cavalier... or three's... range.

Fourth, Eirika is really an incredibly flimsy Lord. I think it's more insulting in this game because Ephraim's a tank, and Eirika is a sheet of tissue paper.

And that is why I've had to restart the current chapter three times. Though the first two times were Joshua (who is ALSO incredibly flimsy) and Artur (who is a freaking magic-user). And I also accidentally got the adult female villager killed by a giant spider this round, but I frankly don't care at this point. No one ever mistook ME for a skilled tactician.

guardians_song: Part of Fire Emblem 7's Chapter 19xx CG, colored (Nergal and children)

On second thought, I liked that Ruby cart more than I thought.

Sacred Stones it is. I'm doing a new Eirika run on Difficult, possibly with the following condition:

1) Pseudo-Nuzlocke: If anyone dies, the chapter is instantly restarted. However, they are not allowed to be deployed on the battlefield again.

But more importantly:

2) NO. GRINDING. No Arena, no monsters, nothing.

This may get very painful.

...Let's just say that I will be hiding behind Seth a lot. And screw Gaidens. I'm running this blind, and if I don't satisfy turn limits, tough. I don't like Sacred Stones characters as much anyway, so I won't mind if I miss one.

3) The OTHER condition to restart a chapter is if I fail to recruit a unit. Because I'm anal-retentive about these things.
4) If I fail a chapter, I must explain in excruciating detail how I managed to do something so stupid on one of the easiest games in the Fire Emblem franchise.
4a) Note that the starters Lords are excluded from the above Pseudo-Nuzlocke clause, because I need want all the Sacred Weapon users I can for the final battle.
5) I WILL be attempting to use trainees unless it becomes abundantly clear that it's suicidal. Because d'aww, little murderbeasts. <3
6) Note: given the endgame, IF IT IN ANY WAY RESEMBLES A BISHOP, IT IS GETTING USED.
6a) MOULDER IS NOT A BISHOP, HE IS A MUSTACHE.
7) I will be attempting to support Eirika with Ephraim, possibly while they're standing nearby Evil!Lyon (because that was so unintentionally comedic in my first run). Probably ASAP though, as I'm getting Seth/Eirika up to B while I'm in earlygame because I need SOMETHING as compensation for not doing Arenas, and I'm going to be tempted to jack them up to A...

Seth is a good unit even as a prepromote, right? I'm seriously thinking of making him my Paladin and just not leveling him up until the promotions start hitting for everyone else.

Pairings: Eirika/Ephraim, Colm/Neimi, some sort of threeway arrangement with the Trainees (game permitting), and probably Artur/Lute. Natasha/Joshua, in all likelyhood, and Gerik/Marisa if that comes up.
Promotions: Assassin!Colm, Ranger!Neimi, Druid!Ewan, Berserker!Ross, General!Amelia, BISHOP!Artur, Mage-Knight!Lute, BISHOP!Natasha, Swordmaster!Joshua, Gerik-has-the-CON-for-Axes!Gerik, and Swordmaster!Marisa. Because Assassins are nice, but I like that sweet, sweet crit bonus on the GBA Swordmasters. :B

With my luck, will probably become an Eirika/Seth duo around Chapter Five... >_>

Fire Emblem Texts From Last Night characterizations:

Nergal: A pansexual stoner with a blackout-filled past. As a young man, completely irresponsible and incapable of giving a damn about anything. In his later years, distinctly crabby, cynical, and short-tempered, possibly due to a severe lack of drugs.
Athos: His scholarly gay friend with a much more stable mood. Can often be found studying, dealing in Adderall, and being cradled by several younger people while moaning about his hangover.
Ninian: With a father like Nergal, she was bound to not exactly turn out normally. A wild party-girl, she can often be found engaging in border-crossing shenanigans with her brother, passed out after a long night of drunkenness and/or screwing Eliwood, and trying (unsuccessfully) to evade the cops.
Nils: His father's trueborn son, he spends the vast majority of his time high out of his mind and totally blithe about anything he's experiencing. On the rare occasions that he's sober, he's actually quite reasonable and bemused at the crazy antics of the rest of the cast. But mostly he's hiiiiiiigh.
Eliwood: A grounded, clean-cut young man with a secret deviant side. Occasionally hooks up for threesomes with Hector and Lyn, but mainly reduces Ninian to "a puddle of sex"... possibly due to his freaky dragon fetish. One of the most well-adjusted of the group, really.
Sexuality-and-gender-wise, best described as a gay-acting straight. (Well, if people can talk about "straight-acting gay"...)
In the future, he will have a doppelganger son named Roy who combines his prowess in bed with the stoner skills of the Nergal line.
Hector: A math major in a threeway relationship with Lyn and Florina, though apparently Farina has staked a claim to his massive dick. Actually mostly sober, but does really weird things when he's drunk.
Consummately straight.
Lyn: An unemployed, cheerfully horny bisexual who's hooked up with Hector, Florina, Eliwood, Kent, Rath, and the Tactician, and can often be found making booty calls. A very... versatile character.
Florina: The local lesbian/dubious bisexual. Totally besotted with Lyn, and can be found on just about every woman/woman TFLN.
Zephiel: The King of Bern, a disaffected gay man who just wants to get laaaid. In a dysfunctional relationship with his Republican drug dealer.
Jahn: Said Republican drug dealer. Also a Fire Dragon.

Mind, I kind of like English!Henry, but I just want to tie JP!Henry up and take him home with me get fannish towards JP!Henry. The meta possibility of an absolutely horrific past also greatly appeals.

Thinking of shipping Ninian/young!Zephiel.
...Okay, so age 20-21 is when the crack!shipping tendencies appear? Good to know.
(You don't even know. AU!Zephiels are gradually glomming up all the dragons in various AUs. The only reason I haven't shipped him with Idoun is that half-dragons would grow too slowly to become Bern's heirs. Eesh, dragon!fanboyism will get you a lot of ships.)

(Disclaimer: In such an AU, Zephiel would be running away from a murderous father about fifteen years earlier than similar events occurred in canon, so he'd bump into Ninian and Nils before Eliwood did. *grimaces* Urgh, the... joys... of competing ships when you can't resolve it all with a threesome. I'd probably have Fiora take Eliwood instead, since my default AU-TP for Lyn is Hector/Lyn/Florina.)

Have started Gates to Infinity! I was planning to take Tepig for coverage against Ice-types, but... how could I say no to a Pikachu partner? D: *pikapikapika* At any rate, I'm an Axew. Ah, the joys of resisting Fire, Ice, and Lightning. :D (And Grass. Them too.)
