...Strangely enough, spiteful comments on anon memes are about the level of bile frequently thrown around in Cori's fics...
"I hate Ash Ketchum. He is a disgrace to humanity. And I hate his mother. And his Pikachu. And the way he holds his fork. I want him to die." "Jessie, get off the meme, we all know it's you." "FUCK YOU."
True. XD Denim does breathe easier than what the uniforms must be made of.
It's the weird 'omg she looked at me when she said LOVE!' bit. That came off as more Cori trying to push for a 'See, Jessie/James is SO canon in the show!' interpretation... but doing it in a fic where James already knew Jessie and he had the truest of true wubs. It was squeeing over subtext in a fanon where the text is already canon. ...Does that make sense? :\
Yeah, that about sums it up. Kind of silly to use a fic where they're already in love to promote ship tease.
Her determination is admirable. Then you think about what that determination is ABOUT and it stops being so admirable.
Half the issue is, I think, that Jessie and James are REALLY NOT A GOOD CHOICE for the 'flawless and pure relationship' type of fanon. They fight, they insult each other, their schemes and priorities sometimes clash... I AM frankly a Rocketshipper, but it just doesn't work. It's like trying to write an Eliwood/Ninian WYDS with Eliwood being this massive tsundere and Ninian being a domineering creepy-seme type. I mean, how would that even work.
OH God. XD Now I wanna see that as a parody. "S-stupid dragon girl! It's not like I LIKE your stupid dances!" "Oh, Eliwood, I know you say these things out of the hurt in your heart. I know our love is meant to be." And Hector stands by making Meowth-esque comments until Farina drags him away.
As a result, Cori has to excuse all of the incompatible behavior as stemming from Jessie's deep-seated traumas. And that much 'uncharacteristic' behavior from a supposed sweet, weepy, and touchy-feely woobie is disturbing and possibly a sign of a lurking abuser (seriously, Cori!Jessie is 'ALL THE WARNING SIGNS WERE THERE, BUT I WAS BLINDED BY LOVE' writ large) even BEFORE you get into the Cori-specific nuttery.
Cori!Jessie is Noire. There's no way around it, she's the prototype for Noire. Except Noire is cute and likeable and badass and Cori!Jessie is fucking creepy and gross.
Yeah, I wouldn't have a problem with it if A) their relationship wasn't supposed to be TOTALLY PERFECT 100% YEP YEP and B) every clash wasn't portrayed as world-ending trauma. Doesn't Jessie spend several pages working up to suicide (and nearly goes through with it) after a bad fight in To Extend Our Reach?
Yes. Yes, she does. Wobbuffet has to stop her.
And yeah, it reminds me of how whiny and weepy I used to get over fighting with my FRIENDS when I was younger and less mature. A couple in ~true love~ should not remind one of their Old Shames.
C!Syaoran: I'm not. Just Nuzlocking them. *taps away on his GBA*
Oh, good.
THIS IS WHY ROCKETSHIPPING CAN'T BE PLAYED 100% SERIOUSLY UNLESS YOU'RE PURPOSELY GOING FOR DYSFUNCTION. Because if you're gonna take it totally seriously you can't just gloss over or excuse the fact that Jessie beats the shit out of James. Unless you're willing to accept comic relief and play it as such...
*nods* That's what my whole spitefic-verse was initially about. These stories, only from the POV of Ash and his friends and other people who WEREN'T batshit insane. (And then it evolved into...something I haven't worked on for a while but it turned into a big fucking cross-canon party. XD;)
See, I never watched the whole thing so much as a whole lot of excerpts. So the outbreak of Captain Obviousness followed by "Good thinking!" would have made me think she was DELIBERATELY referencing it if it hadn't come out years after her time. XD
Aah. XD
Tracey: You think you have it bad?! She's had me on a starvation diet for days, and whenever I say 'Can I have a carrot stick?', she acts like I asked for a five-course banquet! Because I'm fat or something?!
Misty: And anytime I ask for a cold drink in a clean glass she calls me a bitch and goes on and on about how poor Jessie is and how she deserves clean glasses more! Brock: And I don't think Ash is ever coming out from under his bed again. Ash: *hiding under the bed, shuddering* Can't sleep, Cori will have me beaten to death. Can't sleep, Cori will stab me in the night.
I once heard of a fic where the girl woke up with her stomach bulging the next day. XD Actually it miiiight have been a parody?
"Ash burps disgustingly in Jessie's sainted presence, reminding her of a gluttonous, abusive ex-boyfriend and sending her into a tailspin! Perhaps the food-related trauma may even give her a fic-long eating disorder! How will James ever mend her wounded soul, especially with her slapping at him, insulting him, and running off to cry beautifully in the woods every two scenes?!"
OH MY GOD. XD And Cori wouldn't even portray the eating disorder as a bad thing. Jessie loses up to five pounds, goes paler than usual and faints dramatically and that's it. After all, nothing should ever mar Jessie's perfect beauty unless it makes her MORE beautiful somehow!
...So, so much of these fics would MAKE A LOAD MORE SENSE if Cori would just LET UP A BIT on how perfect Team Rocket are. I admire her sheer output, but it could have been GOOD sheer output if she had just acknowledged that Jessie and James have flaws and that they'll have to work to overcome them, rather than just handwaving it off with how wonderful and underappreciated they are. As is, the enormous quantities of Trouble In Happyland are making it sound more like some sort of Communist-regime propaganda than an actual happy relationship.
God, YES. That's the problem overall! Cori says TR is perfect, perfect, perfect but then their flaws lead to all the wangst and melodrama. Cori just wanted to have her wangst and eat it too and then barf it up on a webpage and force us to look at it.
For one, because there's actually some DEVELOPMENT of those relationships and signs they're going to move towards a better place, versus Cori!Jessie/James's constant stasis in 'horribly unstable "perfect relationship" with abuse overtones and emotional meltdowns aplenty'.
EXACTLY. The thing about so-called "unhealthy relationships" in other canons is that a lot of the time they leave room for change and growth! Nino and Jaffar have time for him to grasp his emotions and her to overcome her own issues by working together. Soren can slowly learn that people besides Ike aren't the worst thing ever even if he never fully gets over his "Fuck the world, all I care about is Ike" mentality. Cori!Jessie and James just remain in the same vicious cycle until the split from canon in which all the drama is glossed over.
In all fairness, has there EVER been a fandom in which a character not possessing any kind of hair-derived magical powers has been canonically suicidal over a haircut? :P
Nope. :P
But yes. And Cordelia and whoever don't end up with the exact same relationship in S support that they had back in C support.
Hell no, especially with Gregor. Also Lon'qu, who mostly overcomes his gynophobia for the sake of asking a woman to marry him. Mostly. He's still pretty tense around some of them but considering his first appearance? He's made progress.
And Ninian doesn't burst into tears, melt down, and wind up standing nearby a ledge looking down whenever she sees Eliwood doing anything other than WORSHIPPING FOREVER AT THE ALTAR OF THE PERFECTION OF THEIR LOVE.
Urge to write Essiefic where Ninian does just that over seeing Eliwood talk to Lyn rising...
And at least Lyon has the excuse of being possessed! Jessie and James are in full control of their bodies and senses!
(For one, they're unstable, woobieish ASSHOLES in Coriverse. They have no compunctions whatsoever about their life of crime, they don't see themselves as responsible for their actions in the slightest, they blame Ash for daring to lecture them about it being wrong, they blame Ash for daring to NOT LET THEM TAKE HIS PIKACHU, they blame Ash for DARING TO THINK BADLY OF THEM FOR THEIR UNREPENTANT THIEVERY...
In all fairness, their being unstable really isn't the central point. It's that they have no sense of responsibility, restraint, or reason in the first place. All the instability does is make them go really over-the-top with all of that.)
True. They're just entitled and whiny shitbags who think the world owes them a giving because of their ~twagic pasts~. Nothing is ever their fault! Even when they go on their weepy self-blaming sprees it's never REALLY their fault! They never needed to apologize because they couldn't help doing such bad things!
