Laboratory-grown vaginas implanted in patients
(Is it strange of me to automatically think 'This is going to be very helpful for trans women'? I know gender-reassignment surgery already works, but, as the article says, vaginal construction surgery as it stands now has a very high chance of complications. Apparently these vaginas are much closer to normal functioning, which is all to the good.)

It Just Irks Me

“Psychopathy is probably the most pleasant-feeling of all the mental disorders,” says the journalist Jon Ronson, whose book, The Psychopath Test, explored the concept of psychopathy and the mental health industry in general. “All of the things that keep you good, morally good, are painful things: guilt, remorse, empathy.”

Well, no, actually. There's the joy of accomplishment, the self-esteem benefit of knowingly doing good, the happiness of causing improvement (of oneself, others, or the world)...

The fear of punishment alone won't make you good. All it will make you is neutral. Goodness actually takes work and motivation. A lump of stone has committed no evil. It has committed no good either.

Did this really need to be STUDIED?

Smokers' brains biased against negative images of smoking

What's next? "Liberals' brains biased against negative depictions of liberalism"? "Conservatives' brains biased against negative depictions of conservatism"? "Gourmets' brains biased against negative images of food"? "Athletes' brains biased against negative images of sports"?

I like neurology and studies on how the brain behaves, don't get me wrong, but sometimes I have to wonder if some neurologists have ever interacted with human beings. People don't like to be told that pleasurable activities are bad for them, even if said activities are highly harmful? WHAT A SHOCK!

...Seriously, I expect to see "Study finds that bears frequently defecate in the woods" in the headlines any idea now. I would not put it past some Captain Obvious researchers to actually investigate that.

^Hm. So people's ability to switch off of previously-but-no-longer rewarding events and their tendency to walk away from something when it turns negative may be genetic. Interestingly enough? They aren't based on the same genes.

That may explain why some people are 'quitters' who nonetheless suffer from addictive tendencies. *embarrassed cough* It also implies that some people persevere in the face of adversity but can nonetheless get out of a burning barn, that some people will doggedly hang on despite negative stimulus for good or for ill, and that some people just quit when something turns bad whether or not it used to be rewarding.

Here's the big question for me. I've seen some people switch from one pattern to another... usually from a 'good' one to a 'bad' one. And usually tied to a traumatic life event or a series thereof in quick succession.

Can trauma change the expression of these genes?

And another, if so...

What is the method to trigger the reversal?

I'm thinking that the reporter is taking an optimistic interpretation, but...

Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.

“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”

This is... interesting...

Welcome to 1984: US Government Employee Edition.

The techniques are a key pillar of the Insider Threat Program, an unprecedented government-wide crackdown under which millions of federal bureaucrats and contractors must watch out for “high-risk persons or behaviors” among co-workers. Those who fail to report them could face penalties, including criminal charges.
Federal employees and contractors are asked to pay particular attention to the lifestyles, attitudes and behaviors – like financial troubles, odd working hours or unexplained travel – of co-workers as a way to predict whether they might do “harm to the United States.” Managers of special insider threat offices will have regular, timely, and, if possible, electronic, access” to employees’ personnel, payroll, disciplinary and “personal contact” files, as well as records of their use of classified and unclassified computer networks, polygraph results, travel reports and financial disclosure forms.
But even the government’s top scientific advisers have questioned these techniques.
Those experts say that trying to predict future acts through behavioral monitoring is unproven and could result in illegal ethnic and racial profiling and privacy violations.

“There is no consensus in the relevant scientific community nor on the committee regarding whether any behavioral surveillance or physiological monitoring techniques are ready for use at all,” concluded a 2008 National Research Council report on detecting terrorists.

Although agencies and departments are still setting up their programs, some employees already are being urged to watch co-workers for “indicators” that include stress, divorce and financial problems.

All departments and agencies involved in the program must closely track their employees’ online activities. The information gathered by monitoring, the administration documents say, “could be used against them in criminal, security, or administrative proceedings.”
“We have not found any silver bullets,” said Deana Caputo, the lead behavioral scientist at MITRE Corp., a nonprofit company working on insider threat efforts for U.S. defense, intelligence and law enforcement agencies. “We don’t have actually any really good profiles or pictures of a bad guy, a good guy gone bad or even the bad guy walking in to do bad things from the very beginning.
A report by the Deloitte consulting firm identifies “several key trends that are making all organizations particularly susceptible to insider threat today.” These trends include an increasingly disgruntled, post-Great Recession workforce and the entry of younger, “Gen Y” employees who were “raised on the Internet” and are “highly involved in social networking.”
Eric Feldman, a former inspector general of the National Reconnaissance Office, the super-secret agency that oversees U.S. spy satellites, expressed concern that relying on workers to report colleagues’ suspicious behaviors to security officials could create “a repressive kind of culture.”

“The answer to it is not to have a Stasi-like response,” said Feldman, referring to the feared secret police of communist East Germany. “You’ve removed that firewall between employees seeking help and the threat that any employee who seeks help could be immediately retaliated against by this insider threat office.”

So the government thinks we're out to get them, even though they admit to not knowing what the heck a "bad guy" looks like in the first place, and they think it's perfectly permissible to set up a turn-in-your-coworkers surveillance state in their ranks. Never mind that it's probably going to be used to get revenge on coworkers far more often than it's used even for its (revolting) intended purpose in the first place, and that any spy with brains is going to get in the habit of framing coworkers in order to get a good reputation with the head honchos and throw suspicion off of himself or herself. Nope, this is totally going to solve all their problems.

Has it occurred to them that their lunatic attitudes are driving the leaks?!

Net denizens, time to begin beating the wardrums once more...

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration, resolving years of internal debate, is on the verge of backing a Federal Bureau of Investigation plan for a sweeping overhaul of surveillance laws that would make it easier to wiretap people who communicate using the Internet rather than by traditional phone services, according to officials familiar with the deliberations.
NY Times gives more details.

Spread the word, reblog the snooping, protest like there's no tomorrow. It may seem relatively tame now, but -
The F.B.I. has abandoned a component of its original proposal that would have required companies that facilitate the encryption of users’ messages to always have a key to unscramble them if presented with a court order. Critics had charged that such a law would create back doors for hackers. The current proposal would allow services that fully encrypt messages between users to keep operating, officials said.

If they get their way now, you can be certain they WILL progress back to their original proposal. If you place any value on your privacy whatsoever, raise the hue and cry NOW.

Let me note:
The F.B.I. director, Robert S. Mueller III, has argued that the bureau’s ability to carry out court-approved eavesdropping on suspects is “going dark” as communications technology evolves, and since 2010 has pushed for a legal mandate requiring companies like Facebook and Google to build into their instant-messaging and other such systems a capacity to comply with wiretap orders. That proposal, however, bogged down amid concerns by other agencies, like the Commerce Department, about quashing Silicon Valley innovation.

“I think the F.B.I.’s proposal would render Internet communications less secure and more vulnerable to hackers and identity thieves,” said Gregory T. Nojeim of the Center for Democracy and Technology. “It would also mean that innovators who want to avoid new and expensive mandates will take their innovations abroad and develop them there, where there aren’t the same mandates.”

They WANT to have the social-networking leaders to have the power to read all your PMs at will. They WANT to be able to see what you're doing and saying at all times. They WANT to be able to monitor you like a parent looking over your shoulder...

D'you seriously believe that, once they have this power, they'll only activate it when a court-order calls for it? I suspect the Patriot Act allows for loopholes. This isn't alarmism - just observing the way the government has trended for the last dozen years.

Please spread word of this.

Hospital allegedly attempting to deny autistic activist Amanda Baggs lifesaving care

[Copied over from the original friends-locked [ profile] lumiere42  with permission]

Baggs, the nonverbal US autistic activist from "In My Language" and Loud Hands: Autistic People, Speaking, has long had medical issues with gastroparesis (stomach paralysis). It has progressed to the point where it forces her to live on an entirely liquid diet.  It also frequently causes her to aspirate fluid into her lungs, which has given her several recent life-threatening bouts with pneumonia.

The standard treatment for gastroparesis with these complications is having a feeding tube put in.

Baggs entered the hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Services, on Thursday. According to her and her DPA:

-FAHC attempted to deny Baggs entry unless she had an aide from developmental disability services with her there at all times (despite never having required this when Baggs was in that hospital before).

-FAHC tried to release Baggs the next morning, despite her clearly still being quite sick.

-Despite a feeding tube being standard best practice, FAHC staff have been continually delaying the procedure, with...interesting...excuses (i.e. saying they need to consult her old doctor when it's not necessary).

-Baggs says that, when she told a nurse she wants all measures necessary taken to save her life, the nurse responded by laughing (!)

-Baggs' advocate says personnel tried to claim Baggs was only having "sensations" of aspiration, despite CAT scans clearly showing aspirated crud in her lungs.

-Baggs and her advocate both say that, this morning, a staff member (med student) tried to talk them out of the feeding tube procedure (despite acknowledging that it's standard best practice).

As of Sunday afternoon, Baggs says the staff are discussing the feeding tube procedure again (mostly due to her advocate's pressure).

Baggs' account of these events:

Her advocate's account:

Folks, it looks like they've been trying to avoid giving Baggs care she needs to not end up dying of starvation or aspiration pneumonia. This is TOTALLY unacceptable.

It'll probably really help Baggs' case if FAHC gets tons o' negative feedback about this:

Computer Fraud And Abuse Act 2013: New CFAA Draft Aims To Expand, Not Reform, The ‘Worst Law In Technology'

"“The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act is the most outrageous criminal law you’ve never heard of,” Tim Wu, a Columbia law professor and pioneer of network neutrality, wrote in the New Yorker. “It bans ‘unauthorized access’ of computers, but no one really knows what those words mean.”"
"But what’s perhaps most troubling to Internet freedom advocates is how the new CFAA even expands the law to include accessing information for an “impermissible purpose,” which means even if you have the right to access the information in the first place, it’s still considered a crime if someone deems you are misusing your access in some way."
Which effectively means that they can lock you up on a whim, and strictly means that if you've ever read, listened to, or seen the YouTube video of something online for an "impermissible purpose", you're going to jail. For up to 20 years. You think I'm kidding?
"Here’s an example of the extreme nature of these recommended punishments: Aaron Swartz, who illegally tapped into and downloaded millions of scholarly papers from the digital journal archive JSTOR while visiting the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, faced four charges under section (a)(4) of the CFAA, with a maximum sentences of five years per charge, for a possible total of 20 years in prison. While many lawyers and experts have recommended reducing these penalties or removing them entirely, the new draft actually increases the maximum for each charge under (a)(4) to 20 years, which means Swartz could have gotten 80 years. NYU law professor James Grimmelman on Monday called this notion “simply obscene.”"
Fanmixers, fanficcers, fananythingers - anyone who might just so happen to use data in a way not explicitly permitted by Those On High - you're going to jail if this thing goes through. Or maybe not. It all depends on the whim of your overlords.

And signal boost! Please, signal boost!

On a cheerier note: What street does a 500-pound elephant seal cross? ANY STREET IT WANTS TO.

Police and firemen even threw complimentary buckets of water on it to keep it hydrated.

China locks Tibetan monks in monastery for 'political re-education'

Be of good cheer, Master Ridley, and play the man! We shall this day light such a candle, by God's grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.
- Hugh Latimer (before his burning at the stake in the Marian Persecutions in 1555)
Because someone has to mention this.

Hundreds of monks are getting locked in. And for what? Because one of their number dared publish a book about some Tibetian monks setting themselves on fire as a form of protest against the Chinese authorities.

Signal boost, or at least give thanks that you live in a country in which you can signal boost in ways other than "lighting such a candle".
