Okay. In all seriousness.

What do you think of Amazon's fanfic publishing?

Myself, I cannot see this turning out well. I REALLY can't. For anyone involved.

If this is "successful", it's going to bring a whole new meaning to Fandom Wank. If it's not, then it's going to be an infamous failure.

And they apparently also want your firstborn child - er, OCs...

Ooh boy, this is going to be a trainwreck...

I cannot see it turning out well. It's going to set a bad precedent that will, in all likelihood, cause a lot of other authors to crack down on their work. If Amazon owns the rights to fanfics of their work, whose to say that Amazon won't be able to spin it into owning their work in the first place?

At best, someone's going to rush in, lose the rights to their OC, and throw a fit. At best, this is not a contract that is going to benefit anyone except Amazon.

(And at best, this is reinforcing the idea that publishing your fanfiction with the serial numbers filed off is okay.)

Oh god, that's right. What about AU fics or fix-it fics? The ones that just add an OC into canon? So Amazon technically would own all the dialogue they lifted or replaced, too!

Bugger.

...oh god, Thanfiction is so totally going to get in on this. None of his past fandoms have made the requisite agreement with Amazon, but it's probably only a matter of time and, besides, it would be the easiest thing in the world for him to hop to the Vampire Diaries fandom next.
