Miscellaneous Music Recs...
Don't Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
Seasons don't fear the reaper
Nor do the wind, the sun or the rain
We can be like they are
Come on, baby
Don't fear the reaper
:D If this song isn't in my Top 25 Most Played soon, there's something wrong with the calculations. It's... almost trance-like, takes advantage of both ears, and has... nice music. Maybe it's because the first time I heard it was in a video of the actual vinyl disc being played, but the music evokes... spinning and kaleidoscopes in my head? It's the sort of song that creates its own video, anyway. I once listened to it for two days straight. (*shuts eyes* It was for a fic, don't ask, really, don't ask...)
*looks up on Wikipedia* THIS IS HARD ROCK?! BAHAHA, DON'T LIE, WIKI, IT'S ABOUT AS "HARD" AS SIMON & GARFUNKEL. *cough* Don't buy that silliness, at any rate. The song itself, both in music and lyrics, borders on mystical, not GRRRAAH HARD ROCK. :P
If you buy any Blue Oyster Cult song, buy this one.
Black Blade - Blue Oyster Cult
I have this feeling that my luck is none too good;
This sword here at my side don't act the way it should,
Keeps calling me its master, but I feel like its slave
Holding me faster and faster to an early, early grave!
Ah, the black blade... forged a "million billion years ago"...
"[...] Hahahaha... You poor fucking humans."
Joan Crawford - Blue Oyster Cult
JOAN CRAWFORD HAS RISEN
FROM THE GRAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE!
...If you don't understand what's so great about this song from those lyrics alone, you have no soul. Seriously, I would be content with a song consisting of that refrain alone. Fortunately, the rest of the lyrics are just as surreal, so you won't get bored.
(WARNING: For all that they're surreal, they do tie into the Mommie Dearest biography of Joan Crawford, and so I'd put up a TRIGGER WARNING FOR EMOTIONAL ABUSE.)
Astronomy - Blue Oyster Cult
The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reason tends to fly away
Did I say "surreal"? The lyrics of this song consist entirely of sections of a poem by the band's producer. And it makes no sense whatsoever, though it's sung in a lovely way, it's got nice imagery, and they really outdid themselves on the music.
Take Me Away - Blue Oyster Cult
Strange shapes light up the night
Never seen them, though I hope I might
Don't ask if they are real
The men in black - their lips are sealed
...Yes, I bought two albums by them in the last few months. You noticed.
Anyway, this one has nice guitar riffs, surreal singing, and lyrics talking about alien abduction (or a desire for them, anyway). What's more to like?
Veteran of the Psychic Wars - Blue Oyster Cult
You see me now a veteran
Of a thousand psychic wars
I've been living on the edge so long
Where the winds of limbo roar
And I'm young enough to look at
And far too old to see
All the scars are on the inside
...What drum did they use on this? Whatever it is, I'd like to know. No, seriously. Half the appeal of this song is whatever weird drumbeat they used. The other half, obviously, is the lyrics... Whatever it is, it's quite distinctive, and I like it.
Fire of Unknown Origin - Blue Oyster Cult
Deaaaaath comes sweepin' through the hallway
Like a lady's dress
Deaaaaath comes drivin' down the highway
In its Sunday best
I don't think this is intentional, but the instrumental part evokes dance music... And that's my main comment about it, anyway.
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Yes, I know it's a drug song. Funny thing about drug songs - listen to enough of them, and you don't need chemicals to get high.
As a consequence of it being a drug song, the emphasis on the lyrics is... unusual, and the music is a steady, somewhat creepy drumbeat. Listen to it a few times on repeat...
