Comments before doing a Pokemon Blue Nuzlocke:

Q: You're doing this on a ROM, aren't you?
A: Well... yes... *cringes* Don't know where my cartridges are, and the only Pokemon RB cartridge whose location I know happens to contain a game that I very much like (Jahn the Charizard, Pokemon Red Version), so I wouldn't delete it...

Q: Have you no ethics? Why are you stealing a game and thus money out of Nintendo's hands?
A: This game is 15+ years old. Any cartridges still circulating are used. Nintendo ain't getting any money for this one.
I also own a copy (or two - my mom used to play the games too), so it's not as though I haven't paid dues...

Q: Hypothetically, were I so perverted, where would I get a ROM?
A: Uh, do the words "use a search engine" mean anything to you?

Q: What is a Nuzlocke, anyway?
A: All Pokemon KOs are permanent, can only capture first Pokemon seen on a route. More info here.
I'll also be using DUPLICATE CLAUSE: If you already have a Pokemon of the same species as the first Pokemon seen on a route, reject that one and instead capture the first Pokemon of species you DON'T own on that route. This is mostly to prevent me from getting several identical Geodude-family evolutions.
On the other hand, it's going to bite me in the rear if I should lose Pokemon of lines that are reputable, like Geodude or Zubat. So this may balance out. (D:)

Also, the sanity exception I'll use is that Route 1 Pokemon don't count before I get PokeBalls. Unfortunately, everything else does, so I'd better make sure to have several PokeBalls on hand before I start any new route. I'm not going to have many chances to catch Pokemon, and I DON'T want to lose them.

["Route", here, means "cave" as well. Generally, any area in which I can catch Pokemon has the one-Pokemon-per-area clause. Buying Magikarp is legal, as is obtaining Eevee.]

Q: Your starter?
A: Squirtle. Here are my reasons:
Charizard weaknesses - Rock, Water, Electric; Venusaur weaknesses - Flying, Fire, Psychic, Ice; Blastoise weaknesses - Electric, Grass
Now. Charizard can learn Dig to counter Rock and Electric, but can't counter Water in Gen 1. Venusaur can learn absolutely nothing to counter its weaknesses. And Blastoise can learn... ooh, Earthquake/Dig and Ice Beam/Blizzard.

Of course, you may ask why in the world I'd send Blastoise out against its weaknesses, but I can't tell what sort of crazy situations I'd get into during the Nuzlocke. For all I know, I may end going starter-to-starter in the Champion battle, and it might save my *bleep*. *shrug*

(Assuming my starter lives that long, I mean... D:)

Q: Are you going to remember to get the initial Potion from the PC before the first Rival battle?
A:
GOOD HEAVENS, I HOPE SO! D:

Q: Posting screenshots?
A: Yep. I've no skill at a video LP. Images will be hosted on my LJ account.

Q: General strategy?
A: SURVIVE D:

More seriously, I'll exploit "high-critical" moves if I can due to Gen 1's busted formulas. (The Worst Luck Possible LP taught me that speed higher than a certain number causes Slash to be a GUARANTEED critical hit in Gen 1, for instance. Ooh la LA. ...Only possible if I GET a fast Pokemon with Slash, however.)

I'll also be qualified for commonlaw marriage with Nurse Joy if I run back to the Pokemon Center as much as I plan to do so. With permadeath or perma-deposit-to-PC in my case, but who's counting a reality, I'll try to be as paranoid as I possibly can, and count all possible 2HKO's as a 1HKO due to crits.

Mt. Moon is Nightmare Fuel. I'll be running in and out of that thing like mad to rejuvenate my Pokemon. I fear two things: its length (I'll be avoiding maps if I can, so... D:) and that damn Raticate on a Team Rocket member. May not be as bad as I remember, but Hyper Fang is hell.
(Oh, no wonder. Base 80 power + STAB = 120 power, 90% chance to hit, 10% chance to flinch. It isn't quite Hyper Beam, but for early-game? It's damnably close to That Move. And as a bonus, Raticate doesn't need to take a turn to recharge... D:)

Rival Battles are the other Nightmare Fuel. Kid is meant to be a relatively even match for a normal team, and Nuzlocke forces you to play FE-like. So I HAVE to be prepared to take down any powerful Pokemon FAST, lest I end up having to train up Caterpies after he wipes half my team. So... eek. D: Grind, grind, grind! Thank heavens you can speed up an emulator...

Most of all, though... I'll try to enjoy it and get through in one piece. I can't say I'll survive to the end of the run, but I can at least try! :D
So let's embark on a Nuzlocke!

Good luck, hopefully yours won't end in spectacularly lulzy fail like mine did :p.
