Trying out a Pokemon Red Randomizer.

I'll, uh, tell you how that goes once I can get the damn thing working.

...Okay, I found ONE that would work for me.

I played it for about an hour, I'd say. Now, let me show you the sort of insanity a Randomizer brings on. This is my team at around Rock Tunnel. It's being played [undocumented] Nuzlocke-style - the last Pokemon is a placeholder HM-jockey because I didn't want to waste Cut on a good Pokemon and I had no other options that could learn Cut.

...Mind, I think I might be a bit bored with that Randomizer game, so I might have to generate a new one. The difficulty curve had gone a bit... wonky. You'll see why once I show you the Pokemon beneath the cut.

As far as I can tell, Butterfree replaced Nidoran Male on Route 22, Nidoqueen and Gastly replaced Pidgey and Rattata (I have no idea in which order), Slowpoke replaced Drowsee, and Mew replaced Abra.

...Yeeeees. You will also note that the levels are a bit odd for that point in the game (especially as several Pokemon had died or been switched out of my team), which is what happens when you're wiping the floor with enemy NIDOQUEENS rather than enemy Rattatas. Base EXP 194 versus Base EXP 57 does quite fun things to EXP curves!

So... yes. Having a Mew, even with only Mega Punch/Pound/Transform, does begin to wreak havoc on game balance once it levels up somewhat. Actually, even WITHOUT Mew, the only things that would be dangerous would be things that can counter Nidoqueen. Butterfree STILL makes a good pseudo-Psychic Pokemon, and Slowpoke actually is decent once it gets up to speed. (FIGURATIVELY. Stop laughing.)

Thoughts:

Early-game Butterfree is an incredibly good Pokemon. I know it falls behind later, but Sleep Powder is invaluable for forcing certain creatures into the Pokeball. *90% of my budget is spent on Pokeballs in the randomlocke*

Early-game Ghost types are OBSCENELY overpowered. A fair number of Pokemon have exclusively Normal-type attacks at low levels. Gastly humiliates all of them, and can strike back with Night Shade (which ignores the Normal-type immunity) and Confuse Ray (again, which ignores the Normal-type immunity). Seriously, CAR may be a conditional-use Pokemon, but it's INCREDIBLY useful in all sorts of ways.

Nidoqueen is a very good Pokemon past the point where it learns Body Slam. Basically just keep tapping that, and it will annihilate anything.

...This is a very interesting Randomizer variant. I'm definitely keeping this particular Randomizer vairant, even if its wonky balance leads to things getting overpowered at bizarre times.
I'd recommend trying the Randomizer out yourself, if you have a Pokemon Red or Blue ROM. Who knows what the generator will devise next?
