How To Die Horribly And Repeatedly On Fire Emblem Awakening: A Playtest
All right. So a friend's going to attempt a female-only run sometime, and as such I should use this as an excuse to procrastinate on both work and Nuzlockes try it out to see if it's plausible.
Note: male characters not used = male characters not used for S-rank supports = no second-genners except Lucina, who will be mothered by the Village Maiden. And a level 1 Chrom. *whimper* Are we sure Robin can't, um, stuff Chrom into her harem? Just for safekeeping?
No? Damnit.
General advice after playing several chapters: Pair Up. Pair Up will save your LIFE.
Switch weak units to the front of Pair Ups when you can calculate that proper placement won't get them killed on the next turn, then switch back. Try to keep levels even. You need as many levels as possible.
The exception is the tactician, who is going to get hideously overleveled just because she's the only one who can survive death and murder. Past the first chapter or so, she's a better Jeigan than Frederick. Use her and use her often.
Premonition:
One of you is close to someone who needs help... find this person...fast.
Build 01, Face 05, Hair 05, Voice Female 3 for a sleazy character. Kept trying to think of a name, but discovered I don't have any real jerkish female OCs who fit the correct mold. Funny, that's a pity. :\ Need more character diversity. Too many goody-goodies.
Eventually named her Schala after the Chrono Trigger character. I switched her hair to 13 (blue-green) as a result. Usual birthday of 7/24.
Because I'm an idiot and will likely send her charging into suicidal formations, Asset: Defense, Flaw: Luck.
Killed Validar with two Thorons and a Steel Sword, though came within 4 HP of death in the process. You see, since I'm not using Chrom, he sat in the corner playing with his Falchion like an idiot. Men.
Prologue:
Oh, good! I get another woman! Her idiot brother may go stare into his Jeigan's eyes in the corner for a while.
Ended up having to use a Vulnerary because, as it turns out, you are really not meant to solo the Prologue. Frederick made for a useful obedient meatshield. Was uncertain if it was kosher to use male characters in the sense of healing them for Exp, so Frederick (paired with Chrom) continued to sit in the corner and looked pretty.
Note: this was actually pretty easy once Schala started gaining levels. And, considering the difficulty early on? I think the Defense asset was a good idea.
(Speed is apparently best for Lunatic, so take your pick. My main issue was surviving the initial rush.)
Brill, as a tip, pairing Lissa with Robin boosts her Magic a few points. If you need help making kills, that can help.
Final stats:
Schala L6 Tactician
Lissa L2 Cleric
Chapter 1:
Another woman on the horizon! And a foppish archer, yay. I save Virion from himself by havng him huddle over with Chrom and the Jeigan, and keep Lissa just out of enemy range.
Also... fuckery, first death. Apparently I overestimated Sully's ability to dodge while on a fort.
Brill, when you do this chapter, pair Sully up with Robin. I know it's not ideal for Exp, but you need to keep her alive. Put Sully in front to level her up, switching out as need be. It's tempting to use Lissa, but the clusterfuckery is too bad to risk her.
Final stats:
Schala L7 Tactician
Lissa L2 Cleric
Sully L3 Cavalier
Deaths: 1 (Sully)
Supports: After this, Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala C
Chapter 2:
Yet another woman! It's XX-heaven.
Second death - Miriel died in a catastrophic cluster**** when I accidentally passed her the wrong person for a pair-up. Whoops.
Accidentally forgot to remove Stahl's weapon, but oh well. Schala would have killed the injured foe without sustaining damage if he'd been at full health on the next turn just as easily. Thunder! Thunder, hear my cry!
Final stats:
Schala L7 Tactician
Lissa L3 Cleric
Sully L4 Cavalier
Miriel L2 Mage
Deaths: 2 (Sully, Miriel)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala C
Chapter 3:
In a fit of stupidity, I mistake Miriel for a man and don't take her along. Subsequently I have another fit of stupidity and end up putting Lissa in the red. I also end up getting her nearly killed off later, but end up being able to block with Sully.
No deaths!
Final stats:
Schala L12 Tactician
Lissa L6 Cleric
Sully L7 Cavalier
Miriel L2 Mage
Sumia L3 Pegasus Knight
Deaths: 2 (Sully, Miriel)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C
I reorganize. Miriel gets a Thunder, Lissa gets two new Heals, Schala gets an Iron Sword, Sully gets Frederick's old Silver Lance, and Sumia gets a Javelin and a Bronze Lance.
Donnel's Paralogue gets skipped because he's male. :D So long, most pointlessly-irritating part of the game!
Chapter 4:
Pretty easy. Just keep track of enemy ranges and pair Sully with Sumia to keep bulk up. Miriel can be leveled here, provided that you keep her HP high.
That's fair, because next chapter is going to be a ****ing bitch. I hate the Maribelle-rescue chapter...
Final stats:
Schala L12 Tactician
Lissa L8 Cleric
Sully L7 Cavalier
Miriel L4 Mage
Sumia L4 Pegasus Knight
Deaths: 2 (Sully, Miriel)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C, Miriel/Schala C, Sully/Sumia C
Chapter 5:
Predictably Maribelle got killed. Let's try this again...
This time, Maribelle got killed because I misread movement on Turn 1.
Oh, this time she got killed because I couldn't rush her down in time.
Variety! The spice of life.
My strategy for this one was to park Thunder!Schala on the fort immediately above where you start and just have her soak up perfectly good Exp. Because apparently I'm too incompetent to do more than use her as a crutch.
Brill, for the love of gad, be VERY careful with Maribelle. Park Robin on the fort, monitor enemy ranges EXTREMELY carefully, and use Sully/Sumia to dispatch any blocking her escape route. Maribelle can take about one axe hit, and no Myrmidon hits. After that, she's toast.
Final stats:
Schala L16 Tactician
Lissa L9 Cleric
Sully L9 Cavalier
Miriel L6 Mage
Sumia L6 Pegasus Knight
Maribelle L4 Troubador
Deaths: 5 (Sully, Miriel, Maribelle, Maribelle, MARIBELLE)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C, Miriel/Schala C, Sully/Sumia C
Schala takes Lon'qu's Killing Edge and a spare Thunder. Miriel gets Ricken's Elwind.
Paralogue 2 will follow because I want as much bulk as possible for Chapter 6, which is NOT meant to be played with few units. I will likely pilfer Virion's Elixir for the Sully/Sumia team. I don't even know what I'll do with Lissa and Maribelle - probably have them keep Emmeryn company. ahskahjh I DO NOT LIKE CLUSTERFUCK CHAPTERS
(Alternatively Lissa can huddle with Sully and Maribelle with Sumia or something. I don't know. Miriel needs to hide behind someone with bulk, which means Schala most likely. Sumia does not exactly have "bulk", but at least she can attack. That and... well, I'm the playtester. I'll see. )
Paralogue 2:
Went flawlessly. Several levels gained, no deaths, etc. Anna did die, but she always does that on Hard Mode.
I forgot to note down levels because I went straight into Chapter 6.
Chapter 6:
I restarted once because Lucina died (she died the next time, too, but then I found out her death WASN'T an instant loss), and...
Brill, I have no fucking idea how I beat this chapter.
I stashed Sully/Lissa and Sumia/Maribelle down where Marth is, then... I honestly don't know. I expected to see a death message every turn, but somehow they hung on by inches and could always be resuscitated with a Vulnerary dose. I don't get it.
Incidentally, you do want to keep passing the Javelin between them. Wonderful for killing off dumb mages on the counterattack.
Meanwhile Schala/Miriel took out the west flawlessly. (They were the team that eventually dispatched Validar.) I DID recruit Gaius with Chrom, because I'm a bit anal-retentive - kept Schala just out of Gaius's movement range and Chrom just out of enemy movement range, then killed the axeman and ran in with Chrom to recruit and then Pair Up with Gaius, whereupon they huddled in Emmeryn's room for the rest of the battle. Men. :P
(Also, apologies, Brill. I broke the spirit of the law, if not the letter, by using Gaius to pry open the chest. Your ruleset implied that male characters couldn't be used for anything more than sitting around and taking hits, but I don't think it specifically banned anything but attacking... did it? I've only used male/female Pair Ups when a female character is hanging around in the corner of the map [hello, Lissa] and I get sick of hitting 'Wait' for Chrom as well. I've also used male/male Pair Ups for the same purpose with Chrom/Frederick, Vaike/Virion, and Gaius/Chrom. I DID use Ricken/Maribelle to get Ricken out alive, but that did nothing but sate my sense of anal-retentive keep-everyone-alive drilling. Actually he was more worthless tagging along with Maribelle because he could have at least soaked up a hit if he'd been out in the open, so I hope it works out. [He didn't add to Speed, Defense, or anything that would aid survivability, so he didn't help there either.]
I'm only noting this because I'm 'playtesting' this, and... I feel a bit ashamed of 'cheating' there. But I swear it hasn't been used for anything that would affect outcomes beyond picking the chest and keeping Ricken alive.)
Panne didn't get much use, but did help by guarding the entrance to Emmeryn's room. She ALSO pulled off the entire 'hanging on by a hair' gambit repeatedly... Oh, Concoctions, how I love thee.
For some reason the enemy Thieves preferred assaulting Sully and Sumia to actually prying open the door (at which point the battle would have been over for my side, basically)... bit screwy there, Fire Emblem AI. Not that I'm complaining.
I will note that Sully and Sumia had a B support, which might have aided survivability. Sully also had the Silver Lance equipped at one point, though that may or may not have helped.
Also, when you do this chapter, PLEASE take more Vulneraries on Maribelle and Lissa than I did... because it got a little hairy there. I forgot to take the Elixir. This was a mistake. It would have made either Sumia or Sully a lot more secure at certain points; don't repeat my error.
...I - I honestly don't know. I survived through luck as much as skill there.
To be precise, I first stashed Sully and Sumia in vertical formation to block the corridor leading to Marth, then squeezed closer to Marth when the enemies started pressing in. When Marth kicked the bucket, I wound up with Sully and Sumia two spaces below the double doors (horizontally), then managed to have them survive with partial intervention from Schala (running down from the west). Panne, since I had no idea what to do with her, first killed a mage, somehow survived the next turn, then guarded the one-tile entrance to Emmeryn's room and healed, again somehow surviving the next turn.
Final stats:
Schala L19 Tactician
Lissa L9 Cleric
Sully L12 Cavalier
Miriel L8 Mage
Sumia L10 Pegasus Knight
Maribelle L5 Troubador
Panne L7 Taguel
Deaths: 5 (Sully, Miriel, Maribelle, Maribelle, MARIBELLE)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C, Miriel/Schala B, Sully/Sumia B (same as after Paralogue 2)
Chapter 7:
Another woman on a flying horse! Oh, we're really in a Fire Emblem game now.
This chapter went surprisingly well. I rushed the enemies (carefully) and got out without problems; the only issue is when poor Sumia was left hanging on by one HP, but that was my issue with placement more than an unavoidable difficulty.
...I also once accidentally ended turn when I was trying to look up the exact victory condition, so I had to restart. ...Don't ask.
Brill, watch out for those reinforcements!
Remember, in Hard Mode, they both appear and move on the same turn. Move Chrom as far east as possible on preceding turns without putting him in enemy movement range.
Aside from that, I have no particular comments. Pair someone up with Sully and ride Sully into the south area with a sword equipped. There will be no survivors. Remember that Wyvern Riders use axes, not spears, in this game. It goes pretty quickly. Use Elwind!Miriel to take out the boss - Robin is also an option, but Schala is so overleveled by this point that it would be a waste of good Exp.
Final stats:
Schala L19 Tactician
Lissa L11 Cleric
Sully L14 Cavalier
Miriel L10 Mage
Sumia L11 Pegasus Knight
Maribelle L6 Troubador
Panne L9 Taguel
Cordelia L8 Pegasus Knight
Deaths: 5 (Sully, Miriel, Maribelle, Maribelle, MARIBELLE)
Supports: Lissa/Schala C, Sully/Schala B, Sumia/Schala C, Miriel/Schala B, Sully/Sumia B
Note: Up to this point, I have done no content outside of the normal chapters and Paralogues. I have not even used Risen battles.
I'm not looking forward to Chapter 9, what with suicidal-idiot!Libra and only-Chrom-can-recruit!Tharja. Oh sweet gad. WHO thought it was a good idea to have several characters recruitable ONLY via talking to them with Chrom? *sigh* Well, good luck to myself on keeping Nowi alive...
Note: male characters not used = male characters not used for S-rank supports = no second-genners except Lucina, who will be mothered by the Village Maiden. And a level 1 Chrom. *whimper* Are we sure Robin can't, um, stuff Chrom into her harem? Just for safekeeping?
